Children’s Action Network (CAN) Coordinator

Position Description

DEC is recruiting for an energetic individual with a passion for policy!  The CAN Coordinator plays a pivotal role in advocating for children and families at the national level and serves as a liaison for state and provincial advocacy efforts.  This volunteer position requires an individual who is willing to serve DEC in a leadership capacity and who can work with the Executive Board and staff to accomplish the following:

  • Carefully monitor current policy issues of interest to DEC members.
  • Work with the Executive Director and Governmental Relations Consultant to disseminate policy updates to DEC members.
  • Represent DEC at CAN meetings.  There are two—one in the summer and one at the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) convention in the spring. DEC provides registration fees and full travel support for these meetings.
  • Participate in DEC’s Rapid Response work group and assist in identifying and responding to urgent policy issues.
  • Respond to CEC CAN Alerts and all relevant legislative material received.
  • Assist in the development of DEC policy papers.
  • Help to develop, support, and strengthen our Subdivision network of CAN Coordinators.  Our goal is to have a CAN Coordinator in every Subdivision.
  • Host/facilitate CAN network conference calls/webinars for our Subdivision leaders.
  • Submit regular reports to the Executive Board summarizing activities completed and identifying areas for further action.
