Announcement: Rural Special Education Quarterly


Rural Special Education Quarterly is pleased to announce a special issue on early childhood intervention and preschool services. Articles must have a distinct rural focus and can include any of the following manuscript categories:

·      Research reports: empirical or applied research that use appropriate methods, report significant findings, and offer implications for policy, practice or research;
·      Program descriptions: innovations in service delivery or personnel preparation, with detailed descriptions of procedures and objective evaluation of outcomes;
·      Position papers: discussions of current issues and trends, with literature review and recommendations for policy, practice or research;
·      Promising practices: helpful ideas and examples for direct implementation by practitioners, with sufficient detail for immediate application; and
·      Viewpoints: opinions supported by a clear rationale and convincing evidence about hot topics or controversial issues to share perspectives and stimulate discussion.

Suggested Topics Include:

·      Innovative personnel preparation programs that train early childhood special education personnel and/or related service personnel to work with young children with disabilities.
·      Program descriptions of service delivery models designed to meet the challenges of rural service delivery to young children with disabilities.
·      Conceptual papers on challenges and barriers to deliverying services to young children and their families in rural areas.
·      The impact of contemporary initiatives such as Response to Intervention, Inclusion, Consultative services on early childhood special education in rural settings.
·      Lessons learned from work with international partners to inform rural practices for early childhood special educators.

    Editorial Policy and Guidelines for Submission of Manuscripts to Rural Special Education Quarterly

    The Rural Special Education Quarterly is produced by the American Council on Rural Special Education (ACRES). The Quarterly is the only national scholarly publication solely devoted to rural special education issues. The purpose of the Quarterly is to provide articles concerning federal and other events relevant to rural individuals with disabilities, progressive service delivery systems, reviews of relevant conferences and publications, and resources for rural special educators. Manuscripts that have not been previously published and are not under review by any other publication are invited for review.

    Articles with a distinctly rural focus are accepted for publication in five (5) categories:

    Research reports: empirical or applied research with appropriate methods, and significant findings
    Program descriptions: innovations in service delivery or personnel preparation, with evaluation data
    Position papers: discussions of current issues and trends, with literature review and recommendations
    Promising practices: helpful ideas and examples for direct implementation by practitioners
    Viewpoints: thoughts and feelings about hot topics to share perspectives, stimulate discussion

    Articles submitted must strictly follow the guidelines of the most recent version of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. A detachable cover page to facilitate blind review should include the full name and professional affiliation of each author, as well as the mailing address, telephone numbers, and email address of the principal author. An abstract not to exceed 150 words should summarize the contents of the manuscript and major findings or conclusions. Figures and charts must be presented in a final reproducible format and should not occupy more than a single page. Tables must be submitted either exactly as they are to appear constructed using software with appropriate tab column settings and should be limited to three pages. Letters and numbers on figures, charts, or tables must be readable when presented in reduced form. The entire manuscript, including references, tables, and figures, should not exceed 20 double-spaced, typewritten pages for research reports, program descriptions, and position papers OR 10 double-spaced, typewritten pages for promising practices and viewpoints.

    The manuscript is sent to three reviewers to determine originality, contribution to the field, and suitability for publication in RSEQ. The field review process takes approximately four months.

    The Quarterly reserves the right to edit for clarity and readability. The publisher cannot accept responsibility for the correctness of information supplied to our office or opinions expressed by authors. The mention of commercial products, their sources, or their use in connection with the material reported is not to be construed as either an actual or implied endorsement of such products by the American Council on Rural Special Education, the editor and editorial board, or its affiliates and sponsors.

    Authors should send an email message with the manuscript attached as a Word document to RSEQ (see address below); a reply will to this message will serve as notification of receipt of the manuscript.
    RSEQ does NOT accept print submissions of manuscripts via surface mail.
